AMBRA – CAPRI

5 Bedrooms

Location and Surrounding Area
Located on the most beautiful island in the bay of Naples, this exclusive five-bedroom property is ideally situated to offer tranquility to its guests, providing a perfect seaside retreat for the sweet idleness the Italians refer to as “dolce far niente”. A popular tourist destination since the 19th century, Capri is notable for its residences, gardens and Roman ruins. With its whitewashed stone buildings and car-free streets, Capri Town exudes a cinematic air. Steep cliffs rise majestically from an impossibly blue sea, elegant villas drip with wisteria and bougainvillea and even the trees seem to be carefully manicured.

Villa Lysis is a beautifully melancholic art-nouveau villa set on a clifftop on Capri’s northeast tip. It was the one-time retreat of French poet Jacques d’Adelswärd-Fersen, who came to Capri in 1904. Unlike other stately homes, the interior has been left almost entirely empty. This is a place to let your imagination flesh out the details. It is a 40-minute walk from Piazza Umberto I and rarely crowded. One notable curiosity is the Chinese room in the basement, which includes a semicircular opium den with a swastika emblazoned on the floor.

Villa Jovis was the largest and most sumptuous of twelve Roman villas commissioned by Roman Emperor Tiberius on Capri, and his main island residence. This vast complex, now reduced to ruins, famously pandered to the emperor’s supposedly debauched tastes, and included imperial quarters and extensive bathing areas set in dense gardens and woodland. It’s located a 45-minute walk east of Capri Town along Via Tiberio. Beside the ticket office is the 330m-high Salto di Tiberio, a sheer cliff from where, as the story goes, Tiberius had out-of-favor subjects hurled into the sea. True or not, the stunning views are real.

Capri’s most famous attraction is the Grotta Azzurra, an unusual sea cave illuminated by an otherworldly blue light. The easiest way to visit is to take a boat tour from Marina Grande: tickets include the return boat trip, but the rowing boat into the cave and admission are paid separately. Beautiful though it is, the Grotta is extremely popular in the summer. Sunlight enters through a small underwater aperture and is refracted through the water: this, combined with the reflection of the light off the white sandy seafloor, produces the vivid blue effect to which the cave owes its name.

Ambra is 37 km from Naples, 37 km from Napoli Centrale Railway Station, and 47 km from Naples Capodichino International Airport. The villa is just a fourteen-minute walk from the famous piazzetta and its restaurants, bars and shops. Villa Lysis is just 50 m from the property, Villa Jovis is 450 m, Marina Grande is 2 km, Bagni di Tiberio is 2 km, Villa San Michele is 5 km, Monte Solaro Chair Lift is 6 km, and the Grotta Azzurra is 9 km.
